The Cape Fur Seal, also known as the Brown Fur Seal, is one of Africa’s most unique marine species. You’ll find them inhabiting the southern and southwestern coast of the continent – from the Cape of Good Hope, all the way up to Cape Cross in Namibia. And you’ll find a colony right here in Plettenberg Bay, in the Robberg Nature Reserve!
The Robberg Seal colony is one of South Africa’s largest – with over 6000 seals inhabiting the area. Here you’ll find them sunbathing on the rocks, playing in the water, socialising and showing off their acrobatic skills.
Cape Fur Seals are known for being highly sociable, forming close bonds with members of their herd. They use body language and vocalisation to communicate with one another – and for those embarking on a Seal Swimming Experience, you’ll find them playing and interacting with you too – by swimming up towards you, or giving you a playful, gentle nip on your fin.
They’re also known for their speed and agility in the water – watch them dart, dive and duck beneath the waves, playing or hunting for fish, squid, crustaceans or other small marine animals. Powerful divers, the Cape Fur Seal can reach depths of up to 204 metres – holding their breath for as long as 7 minutes!
Not only highly sociable, the Cape Fur Seal is a gentle natured and incredibly inquisitive creature. Their sweet-natured, curious temperament makes them akin to a playful pup – and it’s part of this reason that visitors to the area can enjoy the rare and unique experience of swimming amongst them – observing and interacting with them in their natural habitat.
